dirty!

dirty!

Let’s talk about toxins and ingredients…These products cover the walls of a fairly popular TEEN jewlery and Makeup store… CLAIRE’s…  yikes.

Talc, Mica, Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Polybutene, Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Tocophoryl Acetate, Tocepherel, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Blue 40 Lake, Red 40 Lake, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Carmine,…  what is all of this?  Here is some information, take it or leave it.

Chemical: Talc: Primary ingredient in blush and powder eye shadow, perfumed powder, baby powder, deodorant, soap
Health concerns: Cosmetic-grade talc is a proven carcinogen; there is a link between use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer. Data suggests that talc can cause tumors in the lungs; it has also been found to cause tumors in lab animals.  WHOA!!!

Chemical: Petrolatum another petroleum derivative, forms a heavier film on the surface of your skin. When your skin perspires and releases water containing salt and chemicals, it aids the liver and kidneys in detoxifying your body. Like mineral oil, petrolatum blocks the skin’s natural breathing and excretion functions.  That doesn’t sound right.

Chemical: Polybutene: Used in cosmetics as a plasticizers.  Derived from petroleum.  Also used for manufacturing adhesives. May asphyxiate.  Considered safe for cosmetic use as currently used.  Plasticizer…  just thinking about that on my face makes me squirm.

Chemical: Propylparaben, Methylparaben: there is so much information about this stuff…Parabens or “-paraben” -cause irritant and allergic reactions, also potentially hormone effects.  Look at what they tell you…

Being a teacher is such an amazing job…

Model Parents

Do you think it’s possible to be in a world of green when it comes to fashion?
Having the title of model isn’t the “greenest” job title or profession if you’re in the world of showing off designer threads.  The fashion world is an industry, a multi-million dollar machine that is not really looking to lose money or make big changes unless indeed it will benefit their pocket, their bottom line.  Don’t forget we Americans do live in the land of Green, and entrepreneurship!  (We are lucky but I will save this topic for another entry.)

Back to fashion and being a model.

Today I’m going to share my experience about being a well paid, long trailed fashion fit model.  I have worked with some truly creative and brilliant design teams and designers in the industry. (Max Azria, Leon Max, Janice Levin…) A fit model is a job that will pay the bills for a long time, if you are offered this position, take it!

Leave it to the good ol’ gene factor to give me the perfect size hips for an industry that measures in the sixteenths…!  As a fit model it is my job to discuss the garment, the fit, the construction, the size, the fabrics, the thread, the smell, the hang of it, the hand of it, ALL of it.  Many designers have told me that I am a gem, a rare find, a gift in the industry.  I’ve always said thank you.  Today, on a much greater level, now, I understand what they were speaking about… I designed with them, I shared with them what I liked, what I didn’t like, the technical, the feel… the… and you know what– a lot of it (my ideas, my comments) had to do with this GREEN concept!  What I do naturally is/was, “green and eco-fabulously hip”.  A green model.  I am a green model.  Being a green model enabled me to be noticed for more that just a pretty face!

Going for the Green today as a model…  Tips to get you noticed:

1. Speak your mind.  Tell them what you feel.  “It itches!”

2. Take note of the fabric(s).  Ask them what it is made of and if it’s a mixed fabric or textile.  Is it 100% cotton or is it mixed with poly… if indeed it’s mixed maybe hint to them that it’s not the wisest choice, and that they may want to consider organic or 100% usage of one type of fabrication, this will also benefit the reuse and recycle program that you are going to get them to start…

3. Offer to test the garment.  Bring the garment home and wash it with your own organic soap… tell them the results.  They of course have their own expensive laundry ways… but your offering is just as helpful and will get you noticed.

4. Exercise your rights.  Sign up for information about fair trade fabrication and garment manufacturing!

Green fashion starts with you, it started with me… and now look at what I do… I share with you!

Being a green model is easy!  Be More.  More Than A Model

WOW, I have the opportunity to work with an awesome TEEN organization, “Teens for Safe Cosmetics” this weekend at Alice Summer Concert in Golden Gate Park.  One of the reasons I am so excited is that Erin Schrode, the founder of TFSC is only 17 years old and she is out there making a difference! Love that.

Working in the commercial, modeling, fashion industry will most likely bring you to many moments where you have to wear makeup.  The industry does not have a standard makeup company that they all work with.  The industry is full of makeup artist whom chose to work with products that they like for one reason or another, it could be the coverage, the color, maybe the texture of a product, it could even be price, it’s on sale…  Who knows, only the make up artist can explain his/her reasoning.  I have so often left a shoot with what seemed like a good product on my face only to have my face break out soon after the days work.  Yuck!

I started using better products on my face about five years ago, and lucky for me I don’t have to wear a lot of makeup, but I do use ALBA lip balms every day all day. (not on the clean list of Teen Safe cosmetics… BUT almost clean) I LOVE it.  Check them out.  Some people may shake their head and say well better products cost a lot more…  well yes they may but in the long run I want my skin to look young and fresh.  I save my money, I sacrifice that extra frozen yogurt once a week.
I’m worth it!

The Essential Face workshop that More Than A Model holds on a monthly basis covers all of kinds of information, while working with licensed skin care professionals.  Kids and teens learn about whole foods, nutrition, and skin care; the best thing is that we are on set while More than a model studio looking at all the ingredients…
Teens For Safe Cosmetics does a fabulous makeover session for teens which I am looking forward to being a part of this weekend.

As models, kids, teens, PEOPLE we don’t need to place chemicals or junk on our faces, we only have one face… WHO wants to have plastic surgery?  I mean really…  not only is it overly expensive, but what if there is a mistake… this is your face we are talking about…

enjoy your skin, take care of it.
